Ask OASIS-Central, Data Elements

Has the reason for emergent care data element changed in OASIS-C?

Q: Now that the definition of emergent care has changed to equal emergency room care, has the reason for emergent care data element changed as well?

A: Yes.  OASIS-C has expanded and revised the choices. The new data element, M2310, lists 18 reasons for emergent care compared to the previous eight that were listed. Respiratory problems have been  split into two reasons: respiratory infection and other respiratory problems. In the same fashion, cardiac problems have been  split into four reasons: heart failure, cardiac dysrhythmia, myocardial infection, and other heart disease. Other new reasons include: deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolus, acute mental/behavioral health problem, uncontrolled pain, stroke or TA, IV catheter-related infection, and urinary tract infection.
