Flu and Pneumonia Data Elements

With winter officially upon us, here is some important information regarding flu and pneumonia data elements.

Flu vaccine

• M1040, influenza vaccine, and M1045, reason influenza vaccine received

• Data elements apply at transfer and discharge if the episode overlapped the flu season (October 1 through March 31)

• Data element asks about flu vaccine (singular)

Pneumonia vaccine

• M1050, pneumonia vaccine, and M1055, reason pneumococcal polysaccharide (PPV) not received

• Data elements apply at transfer and discharge

• If the patient did not receive the vaccine during the episode, find out whether he/she received it in the past

Important points:

• Two new measures for public reporting: influenza immunization received for current flu season and PPV never received

• Agency not expected to provide vaccines, only to find out whether the patient had them

• If the patient did not get the vaccine, check the appropriate reason

• Designate a spot in the clinical record to document vaccination information

This information was adapted from Beacon Health’s audio conference, OASIS-C: What You Must Do Now! Analysis of Redesigned OASIS-C Data Elements, presented by Diane Omdahl. This series has concluded, but on-demand audio files are available for all past sessions. Find more information about audio conferences here.
