Things to Remember as the New Year Approaches

With the implementation of OASIS-C only two days away, here are some things keep in mind in the days before the switch and once it is implemented.

  1. You must use M0090, date assessment completed, to determine which version of OASIS to use during the last five days of 2009. For any assessment completed through December 31, 2009, use OASIS-B1. After January 1, 2010, use OASIS-C.
  2. For the start or resumption of care during the last five days of 2009,determine how long it will take to complete the assessment and select the appropriate version based on the date completed.
  3. The system will reject incorrect versions of the OASIS. Your agency must correct it and resubmit data if it is rejected.

Even though OASIS-C will be here,  continuing staff education and planning is still very important. Remember to do these things through the New Year:

  • Continue studying the OASIS-C Guidance Manual, but look out for an updated version.
  • Confirm readiness of comprehensive assessment package.
  • Develop a procedure for monitoring completion and accuracy of OASIS assessments.
  • Move forward to improve patient care and review and revise your agency’s policies and procedures.
  • Develop plan for agency’s migration to best practices

This information was adapted from Beacon Health’s most recent audio conference, OASIS-C: What You Must Do Now! OASIS-C and the Agency’s Operations, presented by Diane J. Omdahl. The audio conference was the fourth and final session of the series. Find more information about audio conferences here.
