Data Element Spotlight: Bathing, Toilet Transferring and Transferring

Here is a look at the changes made in OASIS-C on bathing, toilet transferring and transferring:

# M1830, bathing (M0670): There are six responses in OASIS-C and some revisions in wording. Response 5 (previously response 4), unable to use the shower or tub, adds that the patient is able to participate in bathing in bed, at the sink, in a bedside chair, or on the commode. The new response 4 notes the patient is unable to use the shower or tub but recognizes that the patient can bathe self independently at the sink, in a chair, or on the commode.

# M1840, toilet transferring (M0680): Besides getting to and from the toilet or commode, the questions in OASIS-C ask about the patient’s ability to transfer on and off the toilet or commode.

# M1850, transferring (M0690): This question in OASIS-C asks about only one transfer: moving safely from bed to chair. Getting in and out of the shower or tub is part of M1830, bathing. Transferring on and off the toilet or commode has been added to M1840, toilet transferring.
