Why isn’t wound care included in M1810 and M1820?

Q: Why isn’t wound care included in M1810 and M1820? The ability to change a wound dressing is relevant to the patients ability to dress him/herself. The dressing applied to the wound is part of the patients current everyday wear during the time the wound is healing. So it is current normal wear. Please advise.

A: M1810 and M1820 inquire about the patient’s current ability to dress the upper and lower body. This is an evaluation of ADL function related to putting on or taking off clothes. The OASIS-C Guidance Manual does specify that “prosthetic, orthotic, or other support devices applied to the upper body or lower body” should be considered when responding to these items. Applying a wound dressing is not incorporated in this item, since this involves the ability to perform a procedure, not a normal activity of daily living. However, if the wound and/or dressing impacted the patient’s current ability to dress the upper or lower body, this would be captured in this item.

M2100 – Types and Sources of Assistance (D – Medical procedures/treatments) is used to assess the assistance needed by the patient to perform wound care.
